Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent has received FDA Approval

On April 24, 2003 the Food and Drug Administration approved the first drug-eluting stent call the CYPHER Stent. This stent is designed to significantly reduce restenosis (reblockage) in coronary arteries. It is coated with the drug sirolimus (rapamune) which is a naturally occuring compound found in soil samples from Easter Island. This compound prevents the buildup of scar tissue that may clog arteries while allowing endothelial cells to grow. This allows for normal growth of the linings inside the coronary artery.
